Clare Hawkins

I have been writing for many years, informally and within structured courses of study. About ten years ago, I made my first attempt to write a novel and am now hooked on writing historical fiction, having written seven novels to date. This absorbing and enjoyable compulsion is also a challenging learning experience, as I pursue my main goal: to write engaging novels, which entertain and satisfy my readers.

I have had some interest from literary agents and a small degree of recognition. In 2010, one of my novels was selected for a place on a one-year programme, Apprenticeships in Fiction, a scheme to help develop unpublished writers run by Adventures in Fiction a leading mentoring agency.

My second novel The Bookbinder’s Daughter was short-listed for the Historical Novel Society’s International Award 2012/13. Since then, some of my other novels, The Conjuror’s Truth, The Apprentice’s Pledge and The Dust of Melita have been long-listed in various competitions : The Mslexia Novel Competition, The Yeovil Literary Award, The Exeter Novel Competition.

My novels are aimed at the commercial fiction market, the earlier ones being set in 16th or 17th century England and Scotland and have a romantic element. My two most recent novels are set in Malta (19th Century and W2) and my current project is leading me into the interwar period in Britain and Germany.

My novel about the siege of Colchester in the English Civil War Lament for a Siege Town was published in June 2015 and available to buy online and in Colchester Castle's museum shop. My most recent book The Dust of Melita, published by Cahill Davis, is available to purchase in bookshops and online.
